Charlie Cox who played the titular role in the Netflix Marvel show Daredevil has given up all his hope to ever return as Daredevil again.
The show premiered on Netflix in 2015 and became one of the best Marvel or even best superhero shows among the fans.
People started talking about all kinds of good things about the show. It did set a good bar for a Marvel show, still better than most of the Disney+ Marvel shows today as well whether you cound its performances, cinematography, direction, action sequences and of course, oldboy style long one take fights.
It went on to return as a second as well as third season, aired in 2016 and 2018 before its cancellation by Netflix.
There was so much dissaspointment about the cancellation of Daredevil and even other spin-off Netflix shows such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders as well, but most for Daredevil.
Just after that, fans started an online campaign to bring back the series whether on Hulu or Disney+ which was a newly launched streaming service that time.
So this happened and after three years of this online save Daredevil campaign, Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home as a cameo.
And then we also saw Vincent D’ Onforio as Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin in the Disney+ show Hawkeye making the return of Daredevil even more obvious to MCU.
One thing was sure at that time, that Daredevil who we knew from the Netflix series played by Charlie Cox is definitely going to be part of the MCU, only more to be revealed.
And with the trailer drop of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, we saw Daredevil in an all new suit teaming up with She-Hulk, this definitely blew minds of the MCU and Daredevil fans.
Finally, there was an official confirmation from Kevin Fiege that Daredevil is getting his own Disney+ show title Daredevil: Born Again which will premiere in 2024.
At the recent D23 2022 event where the show was officially announced by Kevin Fiege, President at Marvel Studios along with Charlie Cox himself at the event.
He spoke to The Hollywood Report about how grateful he is to fans who brought back Daredevil with the online campaign as he had given up all hope and thought he would never get to play this character ever again.
Here’s what Cox spoke :
“I feel like I owe them a huge thank you. The Save Daredevil campaign, they campaigned so hard for this and there were times where I would meet some of them when they came to see the play I was doing in New York or my friends, who followed them online, would tell me stuff that they’re trying to and raise awareness. I would be there thinking, “Oh, guys, I think it’s over. It’s so nice, but I think we need to give up.” [Laughs] And they didn’t, and here we are. “
Well, it is indeed true. Think about it! If fans wouldn’t have started this online campaign desperately to get Daredevil and showed their support, we might not have been getting Daredevil in the MCU.
Or even though we might get someday that won’t be Charlie Cox and other associate characters established in the Daredevil show.
Also, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend at the same D23 Expo 2022, Charlie Cox recalled his time when the show was cancelled and he lost hope to play the character ever again. Here’s what he commented :
“It had been years. I put the suit on for the last time in – I didn’t know it at the time – but it was in 2017. And Kevin called me in 2020. I was joking earlier on like all that time Vincent [D’Onofrio] and I would chat and he was convinced they were going to call us, and I was like, ‘Buddy, like, you’re delusional. It’s over. It’s been over for a long time, like, we’re not playing these characters anymore.’ He’s like, ‘They’re going to call us.’”
Now the question remains how Daredevil: Born Again show connects with the previous Daredevil show released on Netflix, now on Disney+ and how characters continue to this MCU world.
What really concludes about the placement of this show to the respect of previous Daredevil and MCU, is Cox saying that this season being “first season, not season four”.
Charlie Cox basically said “My instinct is based on the name of the show; it’s called Born Again. The fact that Kevin talks about it as being a season one, rather than a season four, my feeling is this is a whole new deal.”
And it only makes sense because Netflix Marvel’s Daredevil has a different tone, more dark and grim, so the Daredevil certainly has to be reborn to get fit for Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Well, given the incompetence of Marvel series and movies recently, fans are concerned about this MCU version of Daredevil, and must not be ruined.
So far we certainly know that the MCU version of Daredevil is definitely going to be more light-hearted than the Netflix version.
What can be trusted is the approval of Charlie Cox himself on the MCU version, so it will be exciting to see this whole new side of this character.
Even though there is quite a long time to see Daredevil in his own Disney+ show, fortunately we are going to see his cameo in perhaps the next episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law.
