To prevent anyone from claiming the throne, Vortigern wants Arthur dead. Legend has it that only the next king can remove Excalibur, Uther’s weapon, from the stone that remains lodged.

As a result, Vortigern commands all the boys of Arthur’s age to try to draw the sword to identify Arthur.
