On the STS-157 voyage, the Space Shuttle Explorer’s crew is at work. Flight engineer Shariff Dasari, medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone, and mission commander Matt Kowalski are on a spacewalk when they receive word from Houston control that a Russian satellite has just exploded.
This is Dr. Stone’s first time in space. Before the crew can react, the explosion debris hurtles toward Explorer, causing irreparable damage to the shuttle and station. All of the team, except Kowalski and Stone, are killed instantly.
Additionally, the explosion debris cuts off at least incoming information exchange with Houston control; however, the crew is unsure if there is also outgoing conversation.
After an accident leaves two astronauts trapped in space, they band together to survive.
Brilliant medical engineer Dr. Ryan Stone is piloting her maiden shuttle mission, while veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski is in charge of his final mission before retiring.
However, tragedy occurs during a seemingly routine spacewalk.
When the shuttle is destroyed, Stone and Kowalsky are left alone, bound only to one another and soaring into the void.
